Buddhism and Design : A Beautiful Way of Life

“There is no path to happiness: happiness is the path.” – Buddha

Buddhism has long been celebrated as a religion of peace. Its core beliefs are such as “nothing is fixed or permanent and that change is always possible” or “the path to Enlightenment is through the practice and development of morality, meditation and wisdom”.

Yes, Buddhism plays a major role in many aspects of life in Thailand. It is the center that holds communities together, it is the moral code that most Thais choose to adopt and, often, it is considered the true secret to a happy life. In essence, Buddhism is a simple commonsense-based concept that reflects universal truth.

Buddhism’s influence is far and wide. Besides the significant role it has in daily life, it could be said that Buddhism is the single biggest source of influence in art and architecture in Thailand. With over 40,000 temples scattered across the country, many dating back several centuries, one can appreciate the master craft, attention to design and detail and the dramatic aesthetics that define Thailand’s architectural landscape. It is deep faith that has brought about such magnificence. A myriad of landmark temples is on display as the finest religion architecture such as Prasat Hin Phimai, Wat Rong Khun, Wat Samphran, Wat Arun Ratchawararam, and the most renowned Wat Phra Kaew, revered as the most sacred Buddhist site in Thailand.

Paying tribute to Buddhism with its rich ornamental details, the temples of Thailand are stunning and distinct. Despite the influence of new urban expansions, Thailand’s sacred temples and religious art will always have a place in the hearts and soul of contemporary Thai designs.
